Seniors’ cruise impresses government official

By Jill Franck

In September 2008, the Assemblies of God Senior Adult Ministries department hosted a five-day cruise to the Caribbean. Although greatly enjoyed by those who registered for the Senior Adult Ministries cruise experience, another passenger was also greatly impacted by the event.

“I wandered into a group of people holding services on the ship and asked if I could attend,” shares Beth Chapman. “After my first service I didn’t miss any for the rest of the cruise. The music, sermons and people were inspiring beyond belief. They allowed me to be spiritually fed and embraced me with their friendship through the love of our God. It was a trip I will never forget!”

Chapman, who also happens to be the current Alabama Secretary of State, didn’t know anything about the Senior Adult Ministries event taking place on the cruise ship. She says she had decided to take a cruise in an attempt to escape some spiritual warfare occurring in her home life. However, when she stumbled upon the AG group, it appears her prayers were answered.

“I have traveled the world and been on many cruises, and have never had the experience I had when I met and worshipped with this group from the Assemblies of God,” she says. “I was able to return home strengthened and renewed. It was a true ‘God thing.’ Their services were the highlight of my trip and a turning point in my spiritual journey.”

“It’s amazing how the Holy Spirit works,” states Dave Weston, director of Senior Adult Ministries. “When this cruise began, who would have imagined that a passenger who was not originally part of our group, would be receiving answers to her prayers through our services! I just believe that when we live and do all things — even fun things, such as cruises — for the glory of God, unexpected and wonderful things can and do happen.”

“That cruise inspired me and brought me closer to God,” Chapman shares. “Anyone given the opportunity to go on such a trip should do so, without hesitation.”

“Few experiences can offer seniors the combination of relaxation, spiritual renewing and fellowship like this cruise,” Weston says. “It’s an event I look forward to with great anticipation — not just for the fun, but to see what God is going to do this time!”

The next Senior Adult Ministry cruise to the Caribbean is scheduled for April 10-15, 2010. Special guests for the cruise include AG General Superintendent George O. Wood and The Original Couriers.
