WAGF to meet tomorrow, world congress in 2011

By Joy Wootton

Picture this. Fifty years ago a missions service occurs on a Sunday night in a typical Assemblies of God church. An offering is taken; an excited newly appointed missionary goes to a new area of the world and presents the gospel for the first time. A young boy is saved, his family is ministered to; a new church is established.

Fifty years later that country has a thriving, growing Assemblies of God network of churches and that boy is their general superintendent.

Yes, in the same position that Dr. George O. Wood serves for the United States, we have over 135 world general superintendents who are members of WAGF (World Assemblies of God Fellowship) and are actively engaged in spreading the gospel in their country and throughout the world.

The Executive Council of WAGF will meet Saturday and Sunday, August 8-9, in the Orlando Rosen Centre for their annual meeting. Members include 24 leaders from seven regions of the world, including Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East, North America and Southern Asia.

WAGF Chairman George O. Wood will lead this meeting focusing on WAGF’s purpose: to support and encourage one another in the task of missions and evangelism and to promote Christian fellowship and cooperation among Assemblies of God people throughout the world.

“In the coming together of these world Assemblies of God leaders, there’s not only a sense of community and support that is strengthened,” explains Wood, “but leaders are given a more vivid picture of the victories and the incredible challenges faced by Assemblies of God fellowships around the world.”

Every three years WAGF hosts a World Congress, an international gathering of all Assemblies of God believers. The next World Congress will be February 2011 in Chennai, India. Nominations from each of the seven regions will be brought to the General Assembly in Madras, India, in order to elect Executive Council representatives from each region for the next three-year term of office.

Any country that becomes a member of WAGF automatically becomes a member of WAGRA (World Assemblies of God Relief Agency).

WAGRA Chairman, Rev. Pawentaoré Ouédraogo of West Africa, will preside over this annual meeting Friday, August 7, in the Orlando Rosen Centre with the aim of coordinating relief for humanitarian needs worldwide. For more information, contact JWootton@ag.org.
