Construction is underway for a 31,650 square foot Wellness Center at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas. The school’s Board of Regents gave enthusiastic approval of the project at the annual meeting last May.
The center is being constructed in a previously open area between the Sheaffer Full Life Center and the James K. and Joyce Bridges Residence Hall. It is designed to match the style of the new buildings and is the next step in the master plan for campus development.
The center will meet a variety of fitness and recreation needs. Planned amenities of the center include weight and aerobic equipment, an elevated walking/jogging track, racquetball courts, multipurpose gymnasium, swimming pool, sauna, lockers and showers. It will be open to the entire campus family and help promote general wellness.
According to Vice President for Student Services Terry Phipps, “The Wellness Center will be very beneficial to students and the entire campus family. Physical fitness produces more energy for the Lord’s work and the center will provide a wholesome Christian atmosphere in which to exercise. It will offer an inviting setting to encourage wellness activities and will also be a healthy social gathering place. All of these benefits at a convenient, on campus location. We’re excited to be able to offer these amenities to the campus family.”
The foundation for the center was poured in early June. Crews put up the steel framing and also started the block work the last week of June. As the frame is constructed, it becomes readily apparent how spacious the facility will be. Administration is projecting the completion of the building between late November and early December of this year.
The Wellness Center is just part of the campus developments underway to further enhance the campus life at SAGU. These developments occur in the midst of record enrollment. The university has enjoyed record enrollment numbers in both the fall and spring semesters of the 08-09 school year.
